Xavi’s debut at Johan Cruijff Arena ends 1-1, but controversy mars

The first international match of Xavi Hernández as head coach of the Netherlands ended at the Johan Cruijff Arena with a 1-1 draw against Germany, after Cody Gakpo scored the long‑awaited equaliser in the closing stages.

Starting lineup and surprises

Xavi's first lineup featured hardly any surprises; the Spaniard largely stuck with the names that were used under Ronald Koeman at the World Cup. Brobbey's injury leaves the Netherlands with only one fit striker, Mexx Meerdink, and puts Xavi under pressure to possibly call up Memphis Depay or Wout Weghorst, or to rely on the versatility of Guus Til and Cody Gakpo.

In the second half the Netherlands dominated and Xavi saw two goals disallowed, but the team eventually found the equaliser through Gakpo, who turned van Bommel's assist into a brilliant goal.
