Xavi Hernández starts in Zeist: his plan for the Netherlands revealed

On a cold Monday afternoon in Zeist, the new national team coach of the Dutch senior team gathers with his first selection. Xavi Hernández, the Spaniard, is ready to start preparations for the upcoming duels against Germany, Serbia and Greece. He declares: “I am in the best place I can be.”

Start of the international period

The press conference marks the official start of Xavi’s first international period as head coach of Orange. He emphasizes that everyone is excited about this new beginning and that there is time to talk to the players and explain the staff ideas. Respect, commitment and teamwork are central to his values.

The door to Orange remains open for Depay and other excluded players such as Wout Weghorst, provided they perform and are fit. Virgil van Dijk retains the captain’s armband under Xavi; the coach traveled personally to Liverpool to speak with the defender and confirmed that there is no reason not to call him up.

Xavi feels comfortable in Zeist, where many Dutch are present and communication is honest and direct. “I am often in Zeist with my staff. People here are honest and direct. So I feel comfortable,” he repeats.

In the coming two weeks, Orange will play four Nations‑League‑matches. Xavi’s first international takes place on Thursday at the Johan Cruijff‑Arena against Germany, followed by away matches against Serbia and Greece, and a concluding match against Serbia at the Philips Stadion on Sunday 4 October.
