Xavi calls leaving Memphis out of Nations League his toughest call

Xavi, the new coach of Holanda, revealed he spoke to Memphis Depay of Corinthians to tell him he would miss the upcoming Liga das Nações fixtures against Germany, Serbia and Greece. He was hired in August after Ronald Koeman’s departure.

Decision and conversation

Xavi said the conversation with the 32‑year‑old striker was frank and that omitting him from the squad was the hardest decision he has faced since taking charge of the national side. He added that the choice was made after careful consideration of the team’s needs.

“The hardest decision perhaps was talking to Memphis. I have a good relationship with him, and he was amazing. His reaction was amazing, with a lot of maturity. He understood everything,” Xavi said, stressing his respect for the player and confirming that the door remains open for all players, including Depay.

The two previously worked together at Barcelona between November 2021 and January 2023. During that spell the Dutch forward featured in 30 matches, scored 13 goals and provided two assists for the Catalan club.

Xavi noted that if Depay is called up again it will be the second time the former Barcelona coach has managed the striker at international level.

Club form and future prospects

Since his contract renewal saga, Depay has appeared in seven matches for Corinthians, yet has not found the net and has contributed one assist. In that period the Timão recorded one win, one draw and five defeats, the sole victory coming against Rosario Central in the Libertadores round of 16.

When asked for the reasons behind the exclusion, Xavi declined to elaborate, describing the matter as confidential between him and the player.

He concluded by reaffirming that the doors are not closed for Memphis or any other player, leaving the possibility of a future recall open.
