Wycombe Wanderers sack Michael Duff, first League casualty in September

Wycombe Wanderers have dismissed head coach Michael Duff after a winless start to the 2026‑27 campaign, making him the first managerial casualty of the Football League season in September. The 48‑year‑old leaves the Chairboys with just three points from five matches.

Club statement and reaction

One of the club’s statements read: “Wycombe Wanderers have part‑ed company with head coach Michael Duff and first‑team coach Alex Morris.” The announcement added that the club thanked both men for their hard work and wished them success in future endeavours.

The decision was described as being taken “in light of a disappointing run of results since the spring” and the club said it believed “the time is right to take a new direction”.

Season struggles and next fixture

Wycombe sit 23rd in League One, having failed to win any of their first seven matches in all competitions and losing to Sheffield Wednesday among three league defeats.

The Chairboys were appointed by the club last September, with Duff arriving after a spell as manager of Cheltenham and Huddersfield, where he had guided the latter to the brink of the League One play‑offs.

During his tenure he recorded 20 wins, 13 draws and 19 defeats from 52 games, becoming the third manager since February 2023 after Matt Bloomfield and Mike Dodds, and following a decade under Gareth Ainsworth.

In early September Duff was charged by the FA for misconduct after the 2‑1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, alleged to have used abusive language towards the match official at full‑time.

Wycombe will look to claim their first win of the campaign when they travel to Leyton Orient on Saturday, with kick‑off scheduled for 12:30 pm.
