Wück’s hunt for the “Eierlegende Wollmilchsau” intensifies after Kössler’s double
In the packed Karlsruhe stadium, Melissa Kössler sprinted into the box, nudged the ball past a defender and flicked it into the net, sparking the first of her two goals in a 4‑2 win over Australia. The DFB‑Frauen’s forward then added a second seven minutes later, delivering a rare Doppelpack that thrust her into the centre of a lingering striker debate.
Kössler’s impact on the match
Seconds before the opening goal, Kössler demanded the ball three Mal, each time finding space but seeing the ball fall to teammate Carlotta Wamser, who lofted a pass to Franziska Kett. Kössler chased Kett’s header, then slipped the ball with the tip of her foot into the net – a finish the coach likened to Thomas Müller’s unconventional style. After the match, she told ARD, “I just wanted to make sure it went in,” laughing when asked if she had copied Müller’s technique.
Wück’s ideal forward
National team coach Christian Wück praised Kössler’s contribution, saying, “When a centre‑forward scores two goals, distributes the ball and wins duels, that is exactly what we need in our system.” He reiterated his search for a physically strong player who can defend, distribute, and finish – the proverbial “Eierlegende Wollmilchsau”.
Wück noted that such a player is “very rare”, but highlighted Nicole Anyomi as a current option who possesses the desired physical attributes, despite limited minutes – only 56 across three league games for London City Lionesses.
Shekiera Martinez was also mentioned as a potential candidate, though Wück admitted she has not yet convinced him fully. Meanwhile, veteran Lea Schüller remains unavailable through illness, having left the base camp on Saturday.
The coach underscored the competitive environment, stating that Kössler’s brace will “put proper pressure on the other centre‑forwards in the squad”. He added that any striker who can combine goal‑scoring with ball distribution fits the Art of play he envisions.
Janina Minge, who appeared alongside Kössler in the photograph, has yet to feature prominently in the scoring charts, but her presence underscores the depth of options Wück is evaluating.
Despite Kössler’s convincing performance, Wück’s quest for the ultimate all‑round striker continues, with the DFB‑Frauen still lacking a definitive solution for the front line.
