Wrexham mock Southampton’s Spygate again with Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac

Wrexham secured a 2‑1 victory over Championship rivals Southampton at the Racecourse Ground on 19 September 2026, thanks to an 89th‑minute own goal from Keven Schlotterbeck. The win ended Phil Parkinson’s three‑game winless streak and prompted the club’s co‑owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, to launch another Spygate‑themed video.

Comments Sport Nathan Ridley, Senior Sports Reporter, recorded the match report at 19:30 on 19 Sep 2026. View Image accompanying the article shows the decisive moment.

The decisive own goal arrived in the 89th minute when Keven Schlotterbeck inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing Wrexham all three points. The result lifted Wrexham to ten points after eight games, level with Southampton in the Championship table.

Five months earlier, Southampton had travelled to Wales and routed Wrexham 5‑1, a result that now looks a distant memory after the recent reversal.

Spygate controversy resurfaces

Weeks after that defeat, it emerged that Southampton had been spying on opponents’ training sessions, including Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town and Oxford United, a breach that saw them expelled from the Championship play‑off final.

Spygate satire continues

On Thursday, Wrexham posted a video starring co‑owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, poking fun at the spying saga. Reynolds, emerging from behind a tree, warned about privacy while promoting sponsor Firefox, and Mac added a line about preventing spies. The clip closed with both men looking at a smartphone allegedly showing Southampton’s pickleball team practising.

The club shared the clip on X, pairing it with a timeline that highlighted the 1‑5 loss on 7 April 2026, the spying revelation on 7 May, and the 2‑1 win on 19 September. The post amassed more than 2,600 likes within an hour, prompting fans to chant “You only win when you’re spying” during the match.

Phil Parkinson, Southampton’s manager, admitted the defeat was a needed lift, saying, “I think we all needed a lift today with a gritty Wrexham performance.” With both sides on ten points after eight fixtures, the international break now looms.
