Wrexham accelerate Racecourse Ground revamp with new Kop Stand

Wrexham have finished the latest phase of the Racecourse Ground redevelopment, moving the new Kop Stand – slated for 7,750 seats – closer to completion. Work on the stand, undertaken by Getty Construction, began in December and the club hopes the structure will be ready before the start of next season.

The steelwork for the new Kop Stand has now been completed, highlighted by the successful installation of a 125‑tonne inverted ribbon truss. CEO Michael Williamson said the lift was a landmark moment for the club and the wider Gateway Project.

Stadium set to meet UEFA standards

The new stand will restore the Racecourse Ground to a four‑sided stadium and lift total capacity beyond 18,000 spectators. Once finished, the venue will meet UEFA category four requirements. Achieving that status would allow Wales to host home European Championship qualifiers and Nations League matches at the ground.

The ground was first built in 1807 and has hosted football since 1864. The previous stand was closed in 2008 over safety concerns and demolished in 2023, leaving the stadium with three sides and a capacity of 10,771. This makes it the smallest venue in the Championship this season.

Wrexham’s campaign under pressure

Wrexham are now in their second successive season in the Championship, having finished seventh last term. They sit 19th after seven games, following a 6‑0 loss to West Ham United last weekend.

The club hopes the Kop Stand will be ready before the start of next season, completing the redevelopment Project on schedule. Meeting category four would give the Red Dragons a new platform for international fixtures.
