Wouter Goes extends stay to 2030, cementing Beker‑Schaal legacy at AZ

AZ has secured defender Wouter Goes on a new contract that runs until the summer of 2030, extending his stay by several years. The long‑term deal marks a significant commitment from the Eredivisie club based in Alkmaar.

Goes added two major trophies to his résumé this year, lifting the KNVB Beker and the Johan Cruijff Schaal. Those successes underline his importance to the squad and his status as a key contributor.

Earlier in the season the defender was linked with a possible transfer away from the club, but he ultimately chose to remain, opting for a longer contract instead of a move.

"For me the most important thing was feeling that I can continue to develop here, both as a player and as a person," Goes explained, emphasizing his desire for personal growth at AZ.

He continued, "I grew up here and became a man. I am very grateful to the club. I want to be an example for the younger players and take on more responsibility." The satisfied AZ’er highlighted his ambition to help the club’s promising youth.

Technical director Niels van Duinen called the extension “an important spearhead”, praising the home‑grown talent for choosing to stay. He added that the club sees the move as a major compliment and hopes Goes will grow into a stronger leader.

In a market where many clubs lose their academy products, AZ’s ability to retain a player of Goes’ calibre reflects a broader focus on internal development and long‑term stability.
