World Cup reminder of Manchester City’s weapon at Met Life Stadium

Rodri’s dominant display in Spain’s 1‑0 World Cup final over Argentina at Met Life Stadium underlined his importance to the Spanish side. The City midfielder was also named player of the tournament, cementing his status as a key figure in Spain’s victorious campaign.

With the triumph, Rodri has now won every major competition available to him as a player for both Manchester City and Spain. This completes a trophy cabinet that few players have matched.

Earlier in his career Rodri suffered a serious knee injury in the 2024‑25 season and endured further setbacks through 2025‑26, raising doubts about his durability. The World Cup proved those concerns unfounded, as he performed at full fitness throughout the tournament.

His performances reminded everyone of the weapon Manchester City possess in midfield, a quality rival clubs currently lack. A fully fit Rodri offers a level of control and dominance that can dictate the tempo of any match.

Looking ahead to the 2026‑27 season, Enzo Maresca’s side will rely on Rodri’s ability to influence every phase of play, and it would not be a surprise to see him captain City. The club’s new era is set to begin with his fully fit presence.

Rodri is entering the final twelve months of his current contract, and a recent report said Manchester City are doing all they can to extend it to avoid losing him for free. The club plans to speak to him now that the World Cup is over about a new deal.
