Wolves chase £10m midfield fix as Jordan James looms

Wolves are scrambling for a central midfielder after Joao Gomes departed for Aston Villa, a gap exposed by a 2‑2 draw with Blackburn where Raul Jimenez rescued a point with a stoppage‑time penalty. Jordan James, the 23‑year‑old Welsh international, has emerged as the club’s top target.

Midfield vacancy after Gomes exit

Cesar Peixoto, Wolves’ manager, has said a right winger and a central midfielder are priority signings. He made clear the need to bolster the middle of the park after Joao Gomes left for Aston Villa on July 20. The departure left a void that was highlighted in the recent 2‑2 stalemate with Blackburn.

James on Wolves’ radar

Jordan James, currently under contract with Rennes, is listed at £10 million and is described as the exact profile Wolves require in midfield. He scored 11 goals in 34 Championship games for Leicester last season and was named Young Player of the Year. His technical qualities and power are seen as an upgrade on current midfielder Marshall Munetsi.

Nathan Shi, the club’s chairman, has made bullish claims ahead of the window but they have yet to materialise. West Ham, Burnley and Middlesbrough are also monitoring James, while TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook reported Wolves are ‘advancing’ with a move. Wolves have already spent around £80 million in January on Jorgen Strand Larsen, Emmanuel Agbadou and Jhon Arias, showing they have funds available.

Supporters hoped a deal could be finalised in time for James to feature at Preston on Saturday. The delay has frustrated fans, who believe a new midfielder is vital after the recent performance.

At £10 million the fee is considered a bargain given James’ age, pedigree and potential. Wolves have already sold Gomes, freeing up budget for the acquisition.
