Wolves bolster WSL2 debut with free signings of Jones and Francis

Wolverhampton Wanderers have secured the services of winger Ellen Jones and forward Olivia Francis on free transfers, completing the double‑signing after a media update to WSL Full‑Time earlier today. The 23‑year‑old Jones arrives from Sunderland, where she spent three years after moving from Leicester City, while the 20‑year‑old Francis joins from Plymouth Argyle, having left the Pilgrims earlier this summer.

Jones, a 23‑year‑old winger, joins Wolves on a free transfer after leaving Sunderland, the club’s Barclays WSL2 rivals. During her three‑year spell on Wearside, she impressed in the North East and made a significant contribution to Sunderland’s attacking unit.

Wolves’ Head of Women and Girls Russ Fraser said the club sees Jones as a versatile forward who is good with both feet and a perfect fit for the squad ahead of their first WSL2 season. Fraser added that her experience in this division and above will be vital and that fans can expect to see her in the Old Gold kit for the first time.

Francis, a 20‑year‑old forward, also arrives on a free transfer after departing Plymouth Argyle earlier this summer. She helped the Pilgrims battle for the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division title last season, reaching the play‑off final where they lost 1‑0 to Wolves. Francis contributed ten goals during that campaign and is also a Welsh international.

According to Fraser, the club had been tracking Francis for a while and her performance in the play‑off final caught their attention, with Macca identifying her as a summer target. He described her as a pacy winger who will play a key role in unlocking and stretching defences this season, adding an extra dimension to the style of football Wolves aim to display.
