Wolfsburg coach urges Eriksen to retire after heart attack

Since Christian Eriksen fell to the ground in June of this year during a friendly international between Denmark and Ukraine, the 34‑year‑old Dane has not played a single minute since; his coach at VfL Wolfsburg, Tobias Strobl, now advises him to end his career.

The scare moment immediately recalled 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during a Euro match against Finland and had an implantable cardioverter‑defibrillator (ICD) implanted.

That same ICD saved him in June of this year when he again ended up on the grass, after which good news quickly followed and he has since been recovering in his home country.

Coach Strobl’s warning

After Wolfsburg’s victory over SV Darmstadt in the 2. Bundesliga, the Dane’s situation briefly came up, and Strobl was asked by Sky Sport Germany about Eriksen’s future.

‘As a coach I have to be careful with what I say, but if I look at it as a person I would stop’, said Strobl.

Eriksen, who after the 2021 incident still played for Brentford and Manchester United, signed with Wolfsburg in 2025 and has one year left on his contract, while the club currently sits fourth in the race to return to the Bundesliga.
