Wolfsburg cashes in on €17m fee as Koulierakis moves to Italy

VfL Wolfsburg has secured a €17 million transfer fee as centre‑back Konstantinos Koulierakis departs for Serie A side AS Roma in Italy. The 22‑year‑old Greek leaves after two seasons with the German club, adding a potential rise through bonus payments.

The Giallorossi announced the signing of the defender on Saturday evening, confirming his new shirt number will be 33. The official statement described the move as a key addition for the club in this transfer window.

Reports indicate the transfer fee is set at €17 million, with clauses that could increase the total through bonus payments. The amount represents the next million‑sum to be transferred to Wolfsburg’s account from player sales.

Sport director Pirmin Schwegler said, “We wish Koulie all the best both sportingly and privately and thank him for his service to VfL Wolfsburg.” The club’s statement was released alongside the official announcement.

Koulierakis arrived in the Autostadt in the summer of 2024 from his homeland and immediately became a regular starter. He recorded seven goal involvements in 66 official matches, showing offensive contribution from his centre‑back position.

He follows Patrick Wimmer’s move to TSG Hoffenheim and Lovro Majer’s transfer to AEK Athens, becoming the third expected departure after Wolfsburg’s relegation. It was an open secret that the Greek would not stay with the club in the second division.

Despite eight new signings, Wolfsburg earned roughly €20 million more than it spent this summer. Relegation forces the club to forgo a large share of top‑flight TV revenue, yet over €20 million has already been invested in the squad overhaul, an unusually high outlay for a second‑division side.
