Argentina names World Cup squad with Messi and three Ajax alumni

🇬🇧

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni announced the final 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup. Lionel Messi is included in the selection. Three players with past ties to Ajax Amsterdam were also named.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez returns after winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. Defender Lisandro Martínez joins him, having previously played for Ajax. Midfielder Enzo Fernández, another former Ajax player, completes the trio.

The squad includes 11 players based in European leagues. Manchester City midfielder Julián Álvarez is among them. Inter Miami forward Sergio Agüero, despite his club’s MLS status, remains part of the group.

Veteran winger Ángel Di María was omitted from the final list. Defender Nicolás Otamendi was also left out after 105 caps. Both players were key figures in Argentina’s 2022 triumph.

The World Cup campaign begins on November 20 against Saudi Arabia. Argentina will defend their title in Qatar’s tournament format.

Scaloni’s selection reflects a blend of experience and emerging talent.
