Witschge questions Ajax's confidence in teen transfer to Newcastle

Former Ajax midfielder Richard Witschge slammed the club’s decision to sell 18‑year‑old Sean Steur to Newcastle United, arguing Ajax lacked confidence in the youngster despite his 25 first‑team appearances, a single goal, and a €24 million move in July to the Premier League.

The update, posted today (Vandaag) at 22:52, recorded Witschge’s view that the sale was “a waste and strange”. He voiced the criticism in the magazine Ajax Life.

Former staff weigh in

Gerard van der Lem, former Ajax youth and assistant coach, also questioned the move, suggesting hidden factors may have influenced the decision.

“I got the feeling he is just as unique a guy as that Veerman from PSV,” van der Lem said, adding that “Volendammers often seem a bit grumpy, very individualistic. Ajax likely thought the money could fund other plans.”

Steur transferred in July for roughly €24 million to the Premier League, joining Newcastle United.

He had featured in only 25 official first‑team matches for Ajax, scoring one goal.

Upon arrival, Steur signed a five‑year contract with Newcastle United.
