Wirtz chooses Anfield over Chelsea and Bayern despite swirling rumours
After Liverpool’s 2-1 win at the G‑Tech on Saturday, Florian Wirtz announced he will remain on Merseyside, even as Chelsea and Bayern Munich continue to circle the German midfielder. The 23‑year‑old has started every one of Liverpool’s nine Premier League and Champions League fixtures this term, logging 739 minutes and providing three assists.
Commitment amid transfer chatter
According to reports, the German midfielder is determined to stay at Anfield despite speculation of a move in 2027. A tweet from the football‑focused account ‘Space’ quoted his father and agent Hans‑Joachim Wirtz saying neither they nor the player intend to indulge Bayern’s fantasies, adding that a switch to Stamford Bridge is “simply not on the agenda”.
The same source noted that former Liverpool boss Xabi Alonso, now at Chelsea, has shown interest, while Bayern representatives have been vocal about a possible Munich transfer. Yet Wirtz’s own statements, relayed through the tweet, reaffirm his commitment to Liverpool’s “mystique”.
Performance under the spotlight
Wirtz’s recent assist to Victor Munoz for the equaliser against a reduced Brentford side marked his second Premier League assist of the 2026‑27 campaign. He also created eight further chances at the G‑Tech, though analysts highlighted the low quality of those opportunities.
Statistically, the midfielder has yet to register an Opta‑defined big chance in the Premier League this season, with a combined xA of 0.19 from nine created chances. By contrast, in 2025‑26 he produced five big chances, trailing only Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million in 2025 and has featured in every league and European outing since, underscoring his importance to Liverpool’s midfield despite the team’s broader struggles.
While interest from Chelsea and Bayern Munich persists, the German’s decision signals that his short‑term future remains firmly rooted at Anfield, leaving both suitors to reassess their pursuit.
