Willem II plugs defensive gap with free‑agent Mats Lemmens

Willem II faced a clear defensive void after the Belgisch debacle and moved quickly to fill it. The club secured 24‑year‑old Mats Lemmens on a free transfer from RWDM Brussels, signing him in Tilburg on a two‑year contract with an option for a third year.

Lemmens arrives after RWDM lost its Challenger Pro League licence because of financial problems. The Belgian club was forced out of the professional ranks in Belgium and will restart at the third level, prompting the defender to look for a new adventure in Nederland.

The defender spent one and a half jaar at RWDM, becoming a key figure in the side. He often wore the captain’s armband and was even named Player of the Year at the Edmond Machtens Stadion.

"From the first talks I had a good feeling at Willem II. The ambition of the club spoke to me directly," Lemmens said on the club site. "I look forward to meeting the supporters and my teammates and will do everything to contribute to a successful season."

Technical director Freek Heerkens also praised the signing. "With Mats we bring in a defender who, despite his age, already has the necessary experience in various competitions," he explained. "He brings physical strength, calmness on the ball and a professional attitude."

Met Lemmens, Willem II have made their first defensive reinforcement for the upcoming season. The Tricolores have also confirmed the arrival of 20‑year‑old midfielder Kasper Boogaard on loan from AZ, adding further depth to the squad.

The Belg will join training in Tilburg and aims to help the team achieve its objectives. His experience and leadership are expected to bolster the back line as Willem II prepare for the new campaign.
