Wigan mourns Kevin Miller as sudden loss hits coaching staff
Wigan Athletic have confirmed the sudden and unexpected death of 57‑year‑old goalkeeping coach Kevin Miller, who passed away overnight on Tuesday. The club described the news as "deeply saddened and devastated" and asked for privacy for his family.
Summer appointment with Gary Caldwell
Kevin Miller linked up with the Latics over the summer, re‑uniting with former Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell. He had stepped down as goalkeeper coach for Exeter City in June, ending more than three years in that role.
Playing career spanning four divisions
Miller began his professional career with Exeter City in 1989, helping the Grecians to the Fourth Division title. He later represented Birmingham City, Watford and Crystal Palace – the latter for a £1.5m fee and a full 38‑game Premier League season before relegation in 1998.
Further spells followed at Barnsley, Bristol Rovers, Derby County, Southampton and Torquay United, as well as non‑league sides Newquay, Falmouth Town and Bodmin Town. He made 252 appearances for Exeter across two spells and amassed 738 appearances in the top four tiers, with more than 700 career games in total.
Tributes from clubs and family
Wigan’s statement praised Miller’s experience, professionalism and uplifting personality, noting he quickly became a much‑loved member of the first‑team staff. Exeter City described him as an "incredibly popular figure" who earned a place in supporters’ hearts and added, "once a Grecian, always a Grecian".
Former clubs Barnsley FC and the Wigan Warriors rugby league side also posted condolences, while former teammate Alan Tonge wrote, "RIP Big Kev. Devastated". The club’s tweet can be viewed on its official account.
Beyond football, Miller was a husband to Fiona, father to daughter Esme and a respected colleague. His sudden passing has left everyone at the club deeply saddened, and Wigan Athletic sent its deepest condolences to his loved ones.
