Wigan mourns Kevin Miller as club cancels press conference

Wigan Athletic are in mourning after the sudden death of goalkeeping coach Kevin Miller, 57, prompting the League One side to cancel the pre‑match press conference ahead of Saturday’s home game against Wycombe. The club said the loss has left staff and players devastated and they have asked for privacy for Miller’s family.

Club announces tragic loss

The League One side confirmed the death on Thursday afternoon, stating that the scheduled pre‑match press conference for the Saturday fixture against Wycombe had been called off. The announcement highlighted the shock and sorrow felt across the club.

Miller arrived at Wigan during the summer to work alongside close friend and manager Gary Caldwell. He had previously spent three and a half years as goalkeeping coach at Exeter City, where the two first collaborated.

In a club statement, Wigan described Miller as a much‑loved and respected member of the first‑team staff despite his brief tenure. His experience, professionalism and passion for goalkeeping were praised alongside his uplifting personality.

The statement sent thoughts and prayers to Miller’s wife Fiona, daughter Esme and his wider family, urging total privacy during this difficult period. The club stressed the depth of the sadness felt by staff and players.

Miller’s career and legacy

Before coaching, Miller began his playing career at Exeter and amassed more than 700 appearances over twenty years. He featured in the Premier League for clubs including Watford, Birmingham, Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Bristol Rovers, Derby, Southampton and Torquay.

Exeter paid tribute on its website, calling him an incredibly popular figure at St James Park whose performances and commitment endeared him to supporters.

Wigan’s own history includes eight seasons in the Premier League after promotion in 2005 and an FA Cup triumph in 2013 over Manchester City. The club now competes in the third tier of English football.

The campaign has begun poorly, with only one win from the opening six League One fixtures, leaving the Latics second‑bottom and a point clear of Doncaster. They sit with four points from a possible eighteen ahead of Saturday’s home match against Wycombe.
