How Leipzig chases the top group after loss to Frankfurt
RB Leipzig ignited a goal fest in the Bundesliga and defeated Eintracht Frankfurt with a decisive 6-0 (4-0 at half‑time), allowing the Saxons to close the gap to the top group and further push their Champions League qualification. The match took place at the Red Bull Arena and saw Frankfurt, after only one win in five games, slip further into crisis.
Goal fest and match progression
Already after 56 seconds, Neil El Aynaoui delivered a cross that Ezechiel Banzuzi (1) safely converted. Shortly afterwards, Christopher Nkunku (5, 41, 44) was set up as a three‑goal scorer, achieving the first perfect hat‑trick in the club’s history. Antonio Nusa added a goal in the 54th minute, and Tidiam Gomis sealed the result in the 89th minute.
Coach Martin Demichelis opted for an offensive press and high tempo, combined over the right wing and exploited the weak Frankfurt defence, which offered little resistance. The Saxons created almost no chances for the visitors and continuously increased the score, while Frankfurt rarely got chances to finish.
Eintracht Frankfurt tried to get back into the game. Ritsu Doan missed a clear chance in the 31st minute, Maarten Vandevoordt held the Leipzig goalkeeper, while Ansgar Knauff (37) and Jonathan Burkardt (38) missed their shots. In the second half the attack remained largely ineffective, even a shot from Knauff in the 70th minute produced no result.
Implications for the league and the Champions League
With the win RB Leipzig climbed to fifth place on the table and collected nine points, while Eintracht Frankfurt slipped to 13th place with five points. The success strengthens Leipzig’s position in the race for the Champions League spots and gives the team momentum for the upcoming clash against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
Coach Adi Hütter criticised the defensive performance of his side after the “crushing defeat” and stated that it was not suitable for the Bundesliga. He criticised the allowance of crosses, the lack of physicality and the inability to stop counter‑attacks, and announced a tough, fair analysis before he wanted to extend his hand to the players again. In this type of defeat the team must fundamentally rethink.
Jonathan Burkardt said: “I find it hard to accept such a team performance. Losing 0‑6 in Leipzig hurts a lot. We were not compact at all, lost every duel in the back, and then look like a school team.” He called for more responsibility from everyone, especially from the senior players.
Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu added: “Conceding 16 goals after five games is a board, we have to change something very quickly. The way we go into the game is sub‑par. We must be ashamed, it cannot continue like this.”
