Why Michael Carrick backs United Champions League return

Why Michael Carrick backs United Champions League return

Man United will re‑enter the European football elite after more than 1,000 days, opening their Champions League campaign against Azeri champions Sabah, with former player Michael Carrick now serving as the bridge between the club’s storied past and its new era.

Return to Europe and Carrick's role

Carrick said: “As a one‑off feeling and instant kind of emotion, definitely winning the Champions League is the best feeling I’ve been lucky enough to have as a footballer.” He added that the triumph remains “the ultimate and was the best feeling I’ve had” and he hopes to feel it again.

“It’s a magical competition,” Carrick continued, noting the special nights it has produced. He insisted United are “delighted to be here, but we’re not here to just enjoy the occasion – we’re here to do business and go as far as we possibly can.”

Carrick's vision and United's recent record

United have finished 15th in the Premier League since their last Champions League appearance, enduring an exile that lasted 1,003 days. Their previous campaign ended in a group with FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, a stark contrast to the ambitions Carrick now voices.

“I think we’ve got to be humble enough and realistic enough to know where we’re coming from and where we want to get to,” Carrick said. He recalled playing in three finals in four seasons and noted United have reached only two quarter‑finals since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement – in 2013‑14 under David Moyes and in 2018‑19 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The fact that Moyes and Solskjaer progressed further than later managers Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho may appear illogical but, Carrick argued, it bodes well for his project. It highlights a gulf between historic glory and recent underachievement that he aims to bridge.

When Ruben Amorim was dismissed, United sought a top‑five finish, and Carrick’s transformative fortnight produced victories over Manchester City and Arsenal. Those results turned a possibility into a probability and helped secure the Champions League spot that now defines his tenure.
