Why Mamadou Sangaré says Brentford was the right move after €48m sale
In a Mercato interview with his new side, Mamadou Sangaré explained why he left RC Lens for Brentford, confirming the €48 million transfer that made him the club’s record sale. The midfielder said the move aligned with his personal ambitions and the club’s clear interest.
The deal was completed on Saturday, officially sending Sangaré to Brentford for €48 million. This fee establishes him as the most lucrative departure in RC Lens history, underscoring the financial scale of the transfer.
Sangaré arrived at Lens last summer, recruited from Rapid Vienne for a modest €13 million fee. The French club invested in the Malian international, hoping his potential would translate into Ligue 1 impact.
During his sole season with the Sang et Or, Sangaré delivered an exceptional campaign, quickly ranking among Ligue 1’s top midfielders. His performances helped Lens secure a brilliant season, confirming the club’s scouting success.
"Coming to Brentford was therefore the best choice for me," Sangaré declared, adding that the English side “did everything to recruit me.” He praised the club’s management for their proactive approach and expressed gratitude for the warm reception.
He continued, "I am really delighted to play in what is, without doubt, the best league in the world," highlighting his excitement about competing in the Premier League and the opportunities it offers.
Sangaré also paid tribute to his former team, saying, "I will always be grateful to Lens." He recalled a previous social‑media message celebrating an “incredible year” with an exceptional staff, and he hopes the club will continue to thrive.
Brentford FC echoed his sentiment on 2 August 2026, posting: "I’ve only one desire: to help the team as much as possible" – a tweet that captured the midfielder’s commitment to his new club.
