Why Celtic must snap at least one Lazio attacker this window
Celtic Keep Close Tabs on the Lazio Pair Why They Must Snap at Least One of the Attackers, after a transfer update from Lorenzo Canicchio on X suggested Isaksen returns in September and Cancellieri is valued at about €15 million.
Gustav Isaksen progressed through Roslev IK and Midtjylland’s academy, broke into Midtjylland’s first‑team squad in 2019 and recorded 33 goals with 18 assists in 139 games. His 2022‑23 form earned a €14.40 million move to SS Lazio in the summer of 2023, and the 25‑year‑old Denmark international has added 14 goals and 11 assists in 121 appearances for Celtic.
Matteo Cancellieri was born in Rome and left his boyhood side AS Roma at 18 after a spell with the reserves. He joined Hellas Verona on loan before a permanent €4 million fee, then moved to SS Lazio on a season‑long loan with an obligation to buy; the deal later became permanent and was followed by loans to Empoli and Parma. Under Maurizio Sarri he secured a regular role last season, and his current valuation is around €15 million.
Celtic have a clear need for a right‑sided attacker after Daizen Maeda’s exit, with Camilo Duran the only summer arrival. Kelechi Iheanacho rejected a contract and moved to Bursaspor, while Yang Hyun‑jun failed to replace Nicolas Kuhn’s productivity. They have often rotated Isaksen with Cancellieri down the right flank, and the club is ready to listen to offers for either player.
Both Isaksen and Cancellieri are left‑footed inverted wingers who like to take on defenders with pace, dribbling and cut‑ins. However, they must improve finishing, decision‑making and consistency of delivery from wide areas to succeed in Scottish football.
If Celtic snap up at least one of the attackers, they would add depth and quality to the right side of their attack, while Lazio could cash in on a €15 million valuation and free up wages. The move would therefore benefit both clubs as they pursue their respective objectives.
