Why Barcelona's €22m Adeyemi deal breaks Dortmund's profit model

Barcelona have completed the signing of German winger Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund for a fixed €22 million, with a further €7 million in performance‑related add‑ons that could raise the total to €29 million. The move bolsters Hansi Flick’s attacking options and marks a rare departure from Dortmund’s usual profit‑driven sales model.

Barcelona targeted Adeyemi to inject pace and versatility into their front line, a priority for Hansi Flick as he rebuilds the squad after a period of transition. The 23‑year‑old German international has demonstrated goal‑scoring instincts and the ability to operate across the attacking midfield and wing positions.

Adeyemi entered the final year of his contract with Dortmund, making him a viable acquisition without a protracted negotiation. His contract status allowed Barcelona to negotiate a relatively modest fee compared with typical market valuations for emerging talents.

Borussia Dortmund originally signed Adeyemi from RB Salzburg in 2022 for €30 million, describing him as an exciting young prospect capable of developing into a world‑class player. Four seasons later the German club faced the prospect of recouping that investment.

The €22 million base fee plus potential add‑ons falls short of the €30 million Dortmund initially paid, meaning the German side did not realise a profit on the transaction. This outcome contrasts sharply with Dortmund’s historical pattern of selling players for substantially higher returns.

Dortmund has built a reputation for identifying young stars, developing them, and later selling them for enormous profits. In 2017 the club sold Ousmane Dembélé to Barcelona for €135 million after buying him from Rennes for €15 million, generating a profit of around €120 million. In 2023 Jude Bellingham moved to Real Madrid for €127 million, having arrived from Birmingham City for €29 million in 2020. Other lucrative exits have included Jadon Sancho, Christian Pulisic, Erling Haaland, Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mario Götze and Jamie Vardy, reinforcing Dortmund’s status as a smart transfer market operator.

Against this backdrop, the Adeyemi deal stands out as an exception rather than the rule, bucking Dortmund’s usual profit‑driven model. It represents one of the few major departures in recent years that has not resulted in a substantial financial windfall for the Bundesliga side.

For Barcelona, the acquisition provides a promising German winger at a modest outlay, enhancing Hansi Flick’s attack without inflating the wage bill. For Dortmund, the transaction underscores the limits of their transfer strategy when a player’s contract runs down, potentially prompting a reassessment of future sales timing.
