Why Aston Villa’s €35m bid for Zion Suzuki demands a guaranteed start

Aston Villa have placed Parma’s 23‑year‑old Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki at the top of their summer wishlist, offering €35 million for the shot‑stopper and insisting any agreement must guarantee him a starting spot as uncertainty swirls around Emiliano Martinez’s future.

Emiliano Martinez is actively considering a return to Italy, prompting Villa Park executives to devise contingency plans. Manager Unai Emery therefore prefers to secure a direct replacement now rather than wait for the goalkeeper’s situation to resolve. Martinez is linked with a possible move to Juventus.

Parma officials have confirmed that Suzuki has no interest in remaining in Serie A and is eager for a move abroad. This desire aligns with Villa’s timeline for acquiring a new first‑choice keeper.

Villa can enhance the offer with the prospect of Champions League football next season. The club has just lifted the Europa League trophy, making top‑flight European competition a realistic bargaining chip.

In the 2025/26 Serie A season, Suzuki made 20 appearances for Parma, logging 1,800 minutes. He recorded five clean sheets and made 62 saves despite managing a nagging hand injury. These figures illustrate his consistency even with limited game time.

At the 2026 World Cup, Suzuki cemented his status as Japan’s undisputed number one, starting four matches and making 15 saves. He featured in the Round of 32 loss to Brazil, raising his profile dramatically.

Paris Saint‑Germain and Juventus are already in deep conversations with Parma over Suzuki. Leeds United previously attempted to sign him, but he rejected the move, stating he would not sit on a bench. His insistence on regular play reinforces Villa’s need to promise a starting role. Villa remain in the mix, confident they can out‑bid rivals by guaranteeing immediate first‑team action.

Standing six‑foot‑three, Suzuki offers a commanding presence, calm under pressure, clean distribution and confidence in claiming high balls. Emery insists that signing him without a guaranteed starting spot would be a waste of the €35 million fee.

The €35 million outlay only makes sense if Martinez departs for Juventus. Otherwise, spending that sum on a backup would be financially reckless.
