Why £5m is Birmingham City’s ceiling for Joe Gelhardt

Why £5m is Birmingham City’s ceiling for Joe Gelhardt

Birmingham City have set a £5 million ceiling for their pursuit of 24-year-old forward Joe Gelhardt, who remains in the final year of his contract at Elland Road.

Adam Elliott, an NCTJ-certified journalist at Football League World, first worked at sister site LeedsAllOver before joining FLW in summer 2023. He also co-hosts the All Stats Aren't We podcast, where he regularly analyses tactics and data.

The Blues have joined the race for Gelhardt after his loan spell at Hull City, where he scored 20 goals in 18 months. Birmingham view him as a proven Championship talent as they push for promotion back to the Premier League.

Gelhardt is deemed surplus to requirements at Leeds United under head coach Daniel Farke, clearing the way for a potential exit. His two-season loan at Hull demonstrated his goal-scoring ability, making him a prime target for clubs in the second tier.

When asked about Birmingham’s valuation, FLW fan pundit Jason Moore said: "It's a weird one for me because I'm quite in the camp of — it's not my money, so spend what you want. But I also don't want to have Birmingham City tax put onto it. I think if Leeds turn around and say that they want £5 million for him, I think, yeah, pay that… So, yeah, £5 million maximum."

Gelhardt’s versatility enhances his appeal; he can play on the right flank, cut inside onto his left foot, lead the line or operate as a second striker. His close control, power and striking ability allow managers to adapt systems without changing personnel.

Despite his adaptability, Gelhardt has indicated a preference for a return to Hull City, where he found success and familiarity during his loan. This complicates Birmingham’s efforts to sign him, as they must now compete with Hull for his signature.

The £5 million cap could ripple across the Championship transfer market this summer, shaping budgets and influencing the movement of versatile forwards like Gelhardt.

With Gelhardt’s contract expiring next year and Leeds open to selling, Birmingham’s £5 million offer may set the tone for other bids in the coming weeks.
