Whitwell says United chose striker over left‑back as midfield revamp continues
Laurie Whitwell told the Talk of the Devils podcast that the Manchester United squad felt a new centre‑forward was more important than adding a left‑back during the summer transfer window, a view echoed by captain Bruno Fernandes.
Midfield overhaul adds depth
United’s summer rebuild centred on the midfield, with Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos arriving to strengthen the centre of the park. The trio joins a midfield already packed with talent, giving manager Michael Carrick more options. Their signings were completed before the club turned its attention to the striking department.
In addition, United spent £8 million to bring England U18 winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur. The young winger adds pace and creativity on the flanks, complementing the midfield influx. His arrival marks the club’s first major investment in a youth international this window.
Goalkeeper Karl Darlow arrived on a free transfer, providing experienced backup behind the first‑choice keeper. Darlow’s signing adds depth without a fee, aligning with United’s cost‑controlled approach. The veteran keeper is expected to compete for cup appearances.
Director of football Jason Wilcox has faced criticism for not replacing Joshua Zirkzee with a striker capable of supporting Benjamin Sesko, and for opting against a left‑back signing. Fans argued a stronger backup for Luke Shaw was needed, especially with United back in the Champions League. The club, however, believes Patrick Dorgu, Baleba, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot can cover defensive duties.
Whitwell explained that players were focused on the striker area, saying Sesko needs an alternative focal point to allow Mbeumo and Cunha to play in their natural positions. He added that left‑back was not a pressing concern because of the squad’s faith in Luke Shaw, who enjoys full support from teammates.
Winter window may bring a striker
United rejected a late approach from Everton to sign Joshua Zirkzee on deadline day. Zirkzee was also the subject of a loan‑to‑buy offer from Fiorentina and attracted interest from Juventus, Napoli and Como. Whitwell expects United to revisit his situation in January.
Potential replacements mentioned include Jean‑Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace and Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic. Fellow journalist Ben Jacobs warned that Michael Carrick’s side will have urgency in the January market, suggesting that a failure to act could have a detrimental knock‑on effect on the second half of the season.
