Where Estevao could become Chelsea’s next attacking linchpin
Chelsea’s inability to force an equaliser at Arsenal on Sunday underlines the still‑limited impact of 19‑year‑old Brazilian winger Estevao Willian, whose late curling effort was denied by goalkeeper David Raya. The near‑miss highlighted the potential role the hamstring‑scarred youngster could play in Xabi Alonso’s side.
Published 10 minutes ago, the Getty Images photograph caption notes that Estevao Willian missed Brazil’s World Cup campaign because of a hamstring injury. The image underscores the physical setback that has delayed his integration into Xabi Alonso’s side.
Limited minutes and competition
Estevao’s game time has been scarce this season, largely because of the club‑record £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and the strong form of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.
The £51 million acquisition from Palmeiras has logged only 96 minutes, with 80 of those coming in the Carabao Cup win over League One side Luton Town, and the remaining 16 split between substitute appearances against Fulham and Premier League champions Arsenal.
He was an unused substitute as Chelsea held on for a narrow victory over Brighton in their third league match, prompting Brazilian media to suggest he was unhappy with his lack of opportunities.
Chelsea officials denied those claims, saying sources at Stamford Bridge and people close to the player were instead excited about the summer recruitment, including the arrival of Rogers.
The club regard Estevao as part of a small untouchable group that also contains Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Moises Caicedo, and have made clear they have no intention of selling any of them.
Early talks have already begun on a new contract for the winger, with Chelsea keen to reward key players after already improving terms for Joao Pedro.
“No, Este is ready, training well. The other day he had a great impact. He is fully involved with a very good attitude every day. I count on Este 100 percent because of his potential. He is so young but he is learning and adapting quickly. The season is long.” – Xabi Alonso
Estevao also suffered a serious grade‑four hamstring tear late last season, which forced him to miss Brazil’s World Cup, but the coach expects his involvement to grow as the campaign progresses.
Future prospects and contract talks
Chelsea’s next cup test comes against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, a match that will be crucial for keeping the 27‑man squad satisfied before the team does not face another cup fixture until the FA Cup in January.
Other young attackers have also seen limited minutes: Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer have started every game, Joao Pedro has started all three league matches, Danny Welbeck led the line against Luton, while Emmanuel Emegha, Aaron Anselmino, Geovany Quenda and Jamie Gittens have each featured for under ten minutes.
