Whelan’s late strike fuels Bohs’ dramatic comeback at Galway
The 3‑2 victory secures three points for Bohs' visitors, keeping them within striking distance of league leaders Shamrock Rovers in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division and ending the day on a high for the Galway city side.
First‑half pressure and early lead
John Caulfield set his back three of Wasiri Williams, Gianfranco Facchineri and Anthony O’Connor firm at Eamonn Deacy Park, while Bohemians held the ball for long spells but struggled to breach the resolute defence. Stephen Walsh opened the scoring for Galway United in the 31st minute, meeting Al‑Amin Kazeem’s cross with an audacious overhead kick that rattled the underside of the cross‑bar before finding the net – his first‑ever goal against Bohemians and a moment that sparked talk of a possible goal‑of‑the‑season.
United pressed forward, with forwards Stephen Walsh and Kris Twardek working tirelessly; Twardek nearly latched onto a looping ball before Paul Walters intervened. Harry Vaughan, a former Hull City playmaker, struck a long‑range effort that drifted just wide. Bohemians’ Darragh Power volleyed over the bar and Ross Tierney was denied at close range by Hugo da Cunha, leaving the hosts with a one‑goal advantage at the interval.
Second‑half surge and turning points
The second half began with Bohemians pressing for an equaliser; Tierney forced da Cunha into a save before Galway United doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when a mix‑up between former United man Patrick Hickey and Paul Walters allowed Twardek to slot the ball home.
Bohemians retreated deeper, yet their persistence paid off when substitute Colm Whelan entered in the 66th minute and, after a 25‑minute cameo, struck in the 74th minute to pull the visitors level. The strike came after sustained pressure and marked a pivotal moment in the comeback.
Tierney restored parity in the 82nd minute, calmly finishing beyond da Cunha after a patient spell of possession. The pressure mounted again and, with minutes remaining, Tierney forced another save before delivering the winning goal in the 89th minute, sealing a three‑point haul for Bohs'.
Both sides will now turn their attention to the FAI Cup semi‑finals next month. Should Bohemians and Galway United both progress, they could meet again in November at the Aviva Stadium for the cup final, while Shamrock Rovers remain the benchmark in the league race.
