West Ham risks big by matching Jarrod Bowen’s wage for Mavropanos

West Ham United are keen to lock down centre‑back Konstantinos Mavropanos after a season that saw him play 31 Premier League matches, total 2,533 minutes, and help the Hammers concede fewer goals despite a record 65‑goal haul, making his presence vital for defensive rebuilding.

The new deal puts Mavropanos in the same wage bracket as top scorer Jarrod Bowen, who traditionally commands the highest earnings at the London Stadium. Bowen’s wage reflects his goal‑scoring record and commercial appeal, and the Hammers have chosen to match that level for a defender.

Mavropanos’ current contract runs until June 2028, and his market value is estimated at €15 million. Transfer‑market reports say the Greek international is now weighing the fresh proposal.

The 28‑year‑old was crowned Hammer of the Year for the 2025/26 campaign, contributing three goals, including a brace in a 4‑0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in April. He also captained the side in the FA Cup and scored a vital equaliser against Manchester City in March.

Rewarding a centre‑back on terms usually reserved for star attackers is rare in modern football, especially for clubs that do not regularly feature in the Champions League. West Ham will not be offering Premier League football next season, creating a clear financial hurdle for the wage increase.

While Mavropanos enjoyed a clean injury record this campaign, earlier years saw several spells on the treatment table, meaning the substantial wage carries a degree of medical risk. The club will likely conduct thorough medical assessments before finalising the contract.

The Hammers conceded a record 65 league goals last season, a statistic that manager Nuno Espirito Santo is eager to improve. Mavropanos was the main figure stabilising the backline during those difficult periods.

Securing the defender’s long‑term future allows West Ham to concentrate on rebuilding the surrounding defensive unit. The bold offer could prove a good move for the Hammers if the player signs.
