West Brom mourns former midfielder after tragic collapse in Portugal

West Brom have said they are devastated after former midfielder Quevin Castro, aged 25, died following a collapse during a friendly match in Portugal. The tragedy struck while Castro was playing for Real Sport Clube, the third‑tier Portuguese side, on Saturday.

The friendly took place between Real Sport Clube and Estrela da Amadora. Castro collapsed on the pitch during the game. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

West Brom issued an official statement expressing their sorrow. The club wrote: “West Brom are devastated to learn of the untimely passing of Quevin Castro, aged just 25.” It added that Albion will observe a tribute on Sunday with applause in the 25th minute and black armbands.

Castro's career and legacy

Quevin made two senior appearances for the Baggies during a two‑year spell at The Hawthorns. He debuted in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal in 2021 and recorded a league appearance the following February. Loan spells followed at Burton, Notts County and Gateshead before he joined York in the summer of 2023, making 15 appearances before returning to Portugal.

Estrela da Amadora released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the loss of their opponent. The club referred to Castro as a player for Real Massama (Real Sport Clube) and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and the Real Massama structure.

Media and public response

The Independent highlighted the broader context of its reporting, from reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech. It noted investigations into the financials of Elon Musk’s pro‑Trump PAC and the production of its documentary ‘The A Word’, which focuses on American women fighting for reproductive rights. The outlet emphasized the importance of on‑the‑ground journalists in the US.

The Independent also called on readers to donate, stressing that quality journalism should be accessible to everyone without paywalls. Contributions help keep reporters on the ground covering stories like this tragedy.
