Werder Bremen’s Mitchell Weiser breaks down on Cologne comeback
In a Bundesliga clash that turned into a Football showcase, 1. FC Köln hosted Werder Bremen (SVW) on the Rhine last night. Coach Daniel Thioune’s side returned to the Weser with just one point, but joy erupted when Mitchell Weiser, sidelined by a torn ACL in July 2025, entered in the 81st minute after a 14‑month absence.
Weiser makes emotional return
The top match between Köln and Werder was billed as a key Rhine derby, yet SVW did not come away with the full haul. Instead the visitors left the Weser with a solitary point.
Weiser, who spent six years in Köln’s youth set‑up, was introduced as a substitute in the 81st minute. His appearance marked the first competitive action since his forced 14‑month lay‑off.
When the final whistle blew, his teammates gathered around him and the 32‑year‑old burst into tears. The emotional scene underscored the significance of his return.
"I really missed being out on the pitch and fighting for points in a stadium with the boys," Weiser said after the match. He added, "If it had been up to other people, the comeback probably wouldn’t have happened until the next game."
Niclas Füllkrug, who also suffered a torn ACL, admitted he "almost cried too" on seeing "Mitchi with tears in his eyes" in front of the away fans. "Unfortunately, I know what that’s like myself," the striker said. "We’re proud of him and happy that he’s back."
Such moments remind fans that football can transcend results. The scene was hailed as a wonderful display of the sport’s human side.
Coach Daniel Thioune’s squad celebrated the emotional milestone, even though the point haul was modest. The joy reflected the personal significance of Weiser’s comeback rather than the match outcome.
