Werder Bremen refuse to cut Alvero as contract talks linger
Werder Bremen enjoyed a solid start to the Bundesliga season, yet not all squad members have matched expectations. The club faced the "Nächste Vertragsauflösung" question after Dawid Kownacki’s contract was terminated last week. Meanwhile, the future of Skelly Alvero is under intense scrutiny. Kownacki's contract terminated
Dawid Kownacki saw his contract with Werder Bremen end in the previous week, as reported by 90min. The midfielder’s departure was part of a broader pattern where several players failed to meet the club’s ambitions. His exit leaves a gap in the squad that the club must now address. The termination underscores the pressure on the club to deliver results in the Bundesliga.
The loss of Kownacki also highlights the competitive nature of the squad, where only those who consistently perform retain their places. Werder’s management signalled that underperformance will not be tolerated, reinforcing a merit‑based approach. This stance has resonated throughout the dressing room, prompting other players to step up. The club’s early season performance remains a key factor in these decisions.
Alvero's contract remains intact
Skelly Alvero, the 2.02‑metre‑tall defensive midfielder, arrived permanently from Olympique Lyon for a €4.75 million fee after an initial loan. A subsequent loan to Amiens SC in the second half of the previous season failed to revitalise his career. Since returning in the summer, the 24‑year‑old has featured only twice for Werder’s second team.
Sport director Clemens Fritz told DeichStube that "a contract termination is not a topic" for Alvero. He added, "Skelly still has the opportunity to prove himself. He must now step up and make himself available, then we will be happy to be positively surprised." Alvero’s contract runs until 2028, meaning any early termination would require a substantial compensation payout.
Midfield competition and future plans
Competition in the midfield remains fierce. While Jens Stage and Senne Lynen are sidelined indefinitely, coach Daniel Thioune currently favours Youri Regeer and Dariusz Stalmach for the central roles. Alvero was forced to leave training early on Monday, adding to concerns about his fitness and form.
The club hopes to secure a paying buyer for Alvero in the winter transfer window, possibly in his native France, despite his limited impact at Bremen. The market potential in France could provide a solution, though his Bremen stint does not serve as an ideal résumé. With the contract secured until 2028, Werder is unlikely to terminate the deal, preferring to explore a sale instead.
