Wembley SNUBBED as Barcelona's Nou Camp wins 2029 Champions League final bid

Wembley SNUBBED as Barcelona's Nou Camp wins 2029 Champions League final bid

Inside the UEFA Executive Committee chamber, the vote was cast and Wembley’s bid was rejected, leaving the iconic stadium SNUBBED for the 2029 Champions League final. The decision, reported by Comments Sport Samuel Meade, Sports Brand Writer at 12:52 on 15 Sep 2026, sparked immediate debate.

UEFA selects Barcelona’s Nou Camp

The Executive Committee chose Barcelona’s revamped Nou Camp, beating competition from Wembley and Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, which has never hosted the event. The selection was announced with View 2 Images and highlighted the stadium’s ON‑stage transformation.

Wembley, re‑opened in 2007, has hosted the European Cup final three times, most recently in 2024, and staged the Euro 2020 final and semi‑finals after a 12‑month pandemic delay. It is also slated to be the focal point of Euro 2028 across the United Kingdom.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta welcomed the decision, saying: "This is an immense source of pride for FC Barcelona and for all Barça supporters. This decision is also international recognition for the new Spotify Camp Nou, which is establishing itself as a world‑class stadium at the forefront of fan experience, technology, connectivity, accessibility, and services."

UEFA also awarded the 2028 final to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, which hosted the showpiece event last year when PSG defeated Inter Milan, marking its third final in sixteen years. This season’s final will be held at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, its second Champions League final after Liverpool’s 2019 triumph.

Since Wembley’s reopening, only the London venue and Bayern’s Allianz Arena have each hosted three Champions League finals, underscoring the rarity of the honour and the impact of the SNUBBED bid on England’s premier stadium.
