Welsh knee injury could be serious, says Matos

Stephen Welsh joined Swansea City on a free transfer from Celtic in the summer and has impressed since arriving, but he now faces a knee injury after being helped off during the 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth on Tuesday. The incident was captured by Huw Evans Picture Agency.

Swansea missed the chance to return to the top of the Championship as they were beaten 3-1 following a dramatic climax at Fratton Park on Tuesday. Welsh was injured in a heavy challenge by Portsmouth midfielder Ebou Adams, who received a booking for the tackle.

When asked whether the Scotland international's problem could be serious, head coach Vitor Matos replied: “Of course there is that possibility, but let's first have the scan and then speak about it.”

Injury list grows

Welsh now joins a growing injury list that already includes long‑term absentee Cameron Burgess, leaving Swansea light on defensive options.

The club also lack wingers Moussa Yeo and Ronald, while midfielder Stephen Eustaquio missed the Portsmouth game after a groin problem forced him off in the previous win over Blackburn Rovers.

Wide player Eom Jisung was also absent at Fratton Park after sustaining a contact injury in the Blackburn match.

Implications for the Swans

These fitness problems have hampered a side that has been losing momentum after a spectacular start to the season.

Swansea looked on course for a draw when Zan Vipotnik's 85th‑minute penalty made it 1-1, but Ross Stewart struck the bar three minutes later.

Portsmouth then scored two stoppage‑time goals to claim victory.

Players and staff from both clubs clashed in the centre circle after the final whistle, prompting a melee.

Matos said he was unsure what sparked the incident, noting it was “not an easy place to come and try to hold the emotions, especially with how the game was,” and added that it was “more a situation for the refs to control” with “quite harsh” decisions.

Former Cardiff midfielder Ebou Adams escaped a second yellow card before half‑time when he tripped Filip Lissah on the edge of Portsmouth's penalty area.

Portsmouth felt aggrieved by the decision to rule out Marezi's tap‑in for a foul on Jenson Seelt by Adrian Segecic when the score was 1-0.

Swansea will look to respond to the loss at Birmingham City on Saturday, their final game before the season's second international break.

The Blues moved into second place with a 3-0 win over Millwall on Tuesday, displacing Swansea.

Matos warned that “it’s a hard league, so many games to come,” and stressed the need to stay emotionally stable.

He added that focusing on improvement is essential for the club.
