Weekend deadline separates Premier Sports Cup hopefuls from qualifiers
With one round remaining in the Premier Sports Cup group stage, a clutch of Scottish Premiership clubs face elimination while others already sit comfortably in the last‑16, making Saturday’s 15 fixtures the decisive moment for survival or progression for each team.
The eight group winners and the three best second‑place sides will join Celtic, Rangers, Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian and Motherwell – Scotland’s five European representatives – in the last 16.
There are 15 matches scheduled for Saturday, after which St Mirren host Dunfermline Athletic on Sunday.
In Group A, Aberdeen can seal top spot with a draw against Kelty Hearts at Pittodrie. After Wednesday’s emphatic victory over Queen of the South, manager Stephen Robinson praised their attacking thrust, saying, "We've won three games and we've created a lot of chances, that's the good thing. Of course, there are things to improve on. We've brought in 10 new players, so it takes time, but you have to pick up results in this competition." Robinson also questioned whether League Cup groups can help build momentum.
Group B sees Dundee United sitting on nine points after completing all four of their matches. Montrose’s result against The Spartans will determine whether they can overtake the Tannadice outfit, but Jim Goodwin’s side would still likely progress as runners‑up thanks to their points tally and healthy goal difference.
In Group C, only St Mirren and Dunfermline Athletic remain in contention. They meet on Sunday, with the Pars needing a three‑goal win to claim top spot, though a narrower victory or a draw would still see them through as runners‑up.
Group D leaders Ross County know a win over Airdrieonians will make them unsurpassable, regardless of Dundee’s result against Clyde. Dundee can still progress on 10 points by beating Clyde, even if they finish behind the Dingwall side.
Group E’s Partick Thistle sit on nine points with a +10 goal difference and are likely to progress, while Stenhousemuir and Livingston, who play each other on Saturday, could only move ahead with a win and if both Aberdeen and Queen's Park record huge victories.
Group F’s St Johnstone must beat League 1 East Fife to stay alive. After a defeat by Inverness Caledonian Thistle left them third, Simo Valakari warned, "I said before Tuesday night that in this competition there's not much room for error. We lost the game and now it's almost out of our hands. The only thing we can do is go and win. We have to take ownership of our own situation." A win for East Fife or an Inverness victory over Greenock Morton would also see the Saints eliminated.
Group G’s Ayr United have already secured the group and will be seeded in the next round if they win their match against Alloa Athletic. In Group H, a draw for Kilmarnock at Peterhead would lift them above Raith Rovers, while a win would crown them group leaders; Hamilton must beat Elgin City by three goals to top the group, though a narrow win could still see them progress as runners‑up. The weekend’s contrasting fortunes highlight how a single round of fixtures can separate clubs fighting for survival from those already assured of a place in the Premier Sports Cup last‑16.
