Wayne Rooney slams Manchester United players after the defeat

In the podcast The United Stand, former Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was particularly upset after his former club’s 4-1 defeat to Como on Wednesday, marking the second consecutive loss in the Champions League. He denounced the attitude of several players, which he deems unacceptable.
4-1 defeat in the Champions League
Wednesday’s match saw Manchester United bow heavily 4-1 to Como, a setback that worsened the club’s already disastrous record in Europe. This defeat follows a previous loss, confirming a run of two consecutive setbacks in the Champions League.
Michael Carrick, now in a more than delicate position within the staff, sees his difficulties amplified by the recent statements from Lisandro Martínez and Bruno Fernandes. Their comments have only fueled the tensions already present in the dressing room.
Rooney’s criticism of the players
According to Rooney, it was the Argentine who lit the fuse: “When Martínez spoke, I said it was an absolute nightmare because it was going to tear the dressing room apart. That was only the beginning. We saw it now with Bruno and you will see it with more players.”
He was no kinder to the Portuguese, stating: “You can debate whether Bruno was right or wrong in what he said, but you must take responsibility on the pitch… There were moments when Sir Alex Ferguson and I didn’t speak, but on the pitch I could have walked through a wall for him.”
The club’s all‑time leading scorer described the players’ attitude as unacceptable: “These players are selfish. They only care about themselves, they don’t care about their teammates, they don’t care about the manager, the staff or the fans.”
He compared them to children, asserting: “They are like babies who throw their toys out of the stroller and then blame someone else. They need to look at themselves.”
In conclusion, Rooney added that Bruno is probably going through the worst period of his career at Manchester United and that, if each player looks in the mirror, they will see that the responsibility lies with them. Otherwise, all is well in the north of England.
