Wayne Rooney’s first signing signals Maritimo’s summer push

The 25‑year‑old left‑back Nathaniel Ogbeta has left Plymouth Argyle to join Portuguese side Maritimo, becoming the first signing of new head coach Wayne Rooney after his contract expired in May. Ogbeta, who scored his only goal for the Pilgrims in a 2‑2 draw at Sunderland in January 2025, made 20 appearances in his first season.

Plymouth Argyle released Ogbeta in May when his contract ran out, ending his spell with the Pilgrims. The 25‑year‑old had featured 20 times for the club during his first season.

He spent the following season on loan at Barnsley, gaining further experience in English football. Before joining Plymouth, Ogbeta was a defender at Swansea City.

Maritimo confirmed the signing, noting that Ogbeta joins the Portuguese outfit as its first acquisition under Rooney’s tenure. The club expects the former Pilgrim to add depth to its defensive options.

The move underscores Maritimo’s proactive approach in the summer transfer window after appointing the high‑profile former England striker as head coach. Rooney’s arrival has already triggered activity, with Ogbeta’s transfer marking the first of several expected signings.

His only goal for Plymouth came in a 2‑2 draw with Sunderland in January 2025, highlighting his occasional attacking contribution. While primarily a left‑back, the goal demonstrated his ability to influence games further up the pitch.
