Wayne Rooney Responds to Andy Carroll's England Behaviour Claims
Former England striker Wayne Rooney has issued a statement refuting former teammate Andy Carroll’s allegations about his conduct on international duty, describing the claims as a fabrication and expressing disappointment. The rebuttal was published in a Reuters piece on the same day.
Carroll, now playing for Dagenham and Redbridge, wrote in his autobiography that Rooney “was surrounded by cartons of fags, crates of lager and bottles of wine, which he had the hotel manager deliver to his room”, adding that the drinks broke the monotony.
Rooney, now 40 and a regular pundit, replied: “I don’t normally comment on falsehoods written about me – but I will address this one. Andy knows we never really socialised; the story about drinking on England duty is a fabrication.”
A close friend of Carroll’s, quoted in the same report, said the former striker is “beyond baffled” by accusations that he invented the tale, insisting he stands by every word and will not be bullied into changing his version.
The manuscript underwent the usual editorial and legal checks before printing, the report added, confirming that the claims were vetted in line with standard publishing practice.
Rooney has long faced intense media scrutiny, with tabloid papers frequently linking him to alleged alcohol problems, a narrative that resurfaced following Carroll’s autobiography.
