Wayne Rooney doubts a manager comeback – only Everton and United

In the Virgin‑Radio studio, Wayne Rooney looks back on his two‑year break from coaching and says that a comeback on the sidelines is highly unlikely for him. He mentions only Everton and Manchester United as possible exceptions, but stresses that even this option is very slim.

Coaching career and possible return

His coaching career comprises only four appointments and reads rather modest in terms of achievements. After his playing days, Rooney began at Derby County, where he smoothly transitioned from player to coach, before moving to DC United in MLS. The last two appointments, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, each lasted only a few months.

As a player, Rooney amassed an impressive 559 appearances for Manchester United between 2002 and 2018, and another 117 games for Everton. He also led the England national team with 120 caps as captain.

In the interview with Virgin Radio, the former national team captain said: “I doubt a comeback. I do know that I have tackled four difficult tasks. The only way I would return in any capacity would be at Everton or Manchester United – but that is very unlikely.”

Thus Rooney’s path back to the sidelines remains uncertain, while his modest coaching record so far and the limited interest from top clubs further diminish the chances of a near‑term comeback.
