Wattens municipality demands talk after WSG’s stadium overhaul
After a comprehensive action by WSG Tirol officials, the municipality of Wattens issued a formal request for a personal discussion over the ongoing demolition and reconstruction of the town’s football stadium, a project that continues to spark heated discussions among local stakeholders.
Stadium reconstruction fuels tension
Tirol coach Philipp Semlic appears far from pleased with the current stadium situation, noting that the prolonged works are affecting the club’s preparations. His comments underline the frustration felt by the team as the venue remains unusable.
Mayor Lukas Schmied said, "Positive emotions belong on the football pitch, but limits have been exceeded here. We will resolve the issue in a personal conversation." The statement was delivered after a press conference on Friday and reflects the municipality’s insistence on a face‑to‑face meeting.
WSG manager‑sport Stefan Köck expressed disappointment after the municipal council rejected a liability assumption on Tuesday. The decision leaves the club to shoulder the financial risk of the reconstruction alone.
The demolition and reconstruction aim to bring the Wattens stadium up to Bundesliga standards, with projected costs exceeding six million euros. The club, a Bundesliga participant, views the upgrade as essential for meeting league requirements.
For years WSG has been playing home matches at the Innsbruck Tivoli stadium, and average attendance for the 2025/26 season was just 1,975 spectators – the lowest figure in the league. The low turnout adds pressure on officials to complete the new stadium promptly.
