Watch out – Ruben van Bommel on his way to Europe's elite
In a podcast by Omroep Brabant, the PSV legends Willy and René van de Kerkhof talked about the young striker Ruben van Bommel, who recently made his debut for the Dutch national team. Willy, 75 years old, praised him as a future star of Europe, while René was still waiting.
Willy van de Kerkhof sees brilliance
Willy van de Kerkhof, the 75‑year‑old PSV icon, praised the young striker. “He is going to become a great player, I am convinced of that,” he said in the podcast. He then added: “Van Bommel will become one of the best players in Europe within a few years, just watch.”
René van de Kerkhof, also a former PSV player, remained more cautious. “He gave a world‑class pass against Germany, of course,” he recalled, referring to the assist for Cody Gakpo’s equaliser. “But against Serbia it was a lot less afterwards. You just have to wait and see how he develops,” he added.
Coaches and future
Willy also emphasized the support of two excellent coaches. “His father Mark and his grandfather Bert van Marwijk are behind him,” he declared. “I spoke to them again at the match against Serbia,” he added, underscoring the family link with the Oranje history.
Mark van Bommel spots winners and five losers early in the window
According to Willy, PSV should especially cherish Van Bommel in the coming period. He warned that “if he continues like this, in a few months someone from England with a tidy sum of money will be standing on the doorstep”. This warning highlights both the commercial and sporting value the club sees in the young striker.
The praise from the two Kerkhof brothers points to a possible key role for Ruben van Bommel in both PSV and the Dutch national team. If he develops into one of Europe’s elite, he could significantly strengthen the attack of both teams.
Mark van Bommel lacks a plan B against Rudi Garcia
His first appearances for the Dutch national team already give a glimpse of his quality. With a world‑class pass against Germany and a contribution to the 1‑1 equaliser, he already shows his potential at international level.
