Was Belgium’s decision to drop Rudi Garcia the right move?

The Belgian football federation has confirmed that Rudi Garcia, 62, will no longer serve as head coach of the Red Devils. His contract, which expired after the World Cup, was not renewed despite a majority of readers urging the federation to keep him in charge.

During his tenure Garcia secured the Red Devils’ place in the Nations League top division, guided Belgium to World Cup qualification and steered the side to the quarter‑finals, where they were eliminated by Spain.

A poll launched by attracted 16,000 respondents, with more than half voting for a longer stay for Garcia. The result showed clear support from the readership, even though the federation ultimately chose a different path.

Analysts from the Deviltime panel noted that Garcia “showed many faces”, sometimes friendly, sometimes stern, and sometimes surprising with his substitutions. One commentator said, “From a distance it is hard to get to know him; I would like to see him work face‑to‑face for a few days.”

Former player and pundit Degryse added, “If you stop with Garcia, you need a better alternative.” He praised Garcia’s experience, highlighted the successful changes against Senegal, and recalled how a drama five minutes into that match turned the tournament’s narrative.

The Belgian federation is now searching for a successor, but no candidate has been identified yet. The next appointment will determine the direction of the national team ahead of upcoming fixtures.

Sports director Vincent Mannaert praised Garcia’s impact, stating he “contributed to the rehabilitation of the Red Devils”. Garcia himself remarked, “I leave Belgium among the top eight teams in the world,” underscoring his view of the team’s standing after the World Cup.
