Walsall secure 24‑year‑old full‑back Furlong to strengthen defence

Walsall have signed full‑back James Furlong on a one‑year contract, the club’s 14th signing of the summer, after the 24‑year‑old left NK Maribor where he had been on a short‑term deal since February. Furlong, who previously featured for Hull City and AFC Wimbledon, joins the Tigers to bolster their defensive options for the upcoming season.

Recent Slovenian stint

The defender most recently played for NK Maribor after departing Hull City to sign a short‑term deal with the Slovenian top‑flight side in February. His time in Slovenia gave him regular first‑team action in a competitive league.

Furlong began his career in his home country of Ireland before moving to Brighton & Hove Albion’s academy in 2019. He made a single appearance in the EFL Cup for the Seagulls and later spent a loan spell at Motherwell.
