Vrancken’s optimism fuels Hearts as they eye Sturm Graz clash

Belgian head coach Wouter Vrancken surveyed his Hearts squad at Tynecastle with clear optimism, insisting the team is ready for Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier against Sturm Graz after a pre‑season that finally matched the intensity he demanded and after a series of pre‑season wins that have reinforced his belief in the players’ commitment.

Vrancken said the pre‑season preparation has finally matched the intensity he demanded. He believes the squad are now delivering the intensity and ideas he set out after a series of pre‑season wins. The coach noted that the recent victories have reinforced his belief in the players’ commitment.

The Belgian coach, who replaced Derek McInnes this summer, was buoyed by an impressive pre‑season display at Tynecastle that ended with a victory over La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. The win highlighted the team’s ability to compete against top‑flight opposition. Vrancken cited the result as evidence of progress.

Since the opening friendly against St Mirren, Vrancken has watched his side evolve steadily. He observed that collective work rate and tactical discipline have risen noticeably. The improvement, he said, is evident in every training session.

“I was confident before because they are so involved and they are so eager to have feedback and to learn new things,” Vrancken said. “But you don’t know the time frame. You don’t know when they are ready. But you see the progression from St Mirren towards today,” he added.

The progress has created a selection headache ahead of Hearts’ European opener. Several players have forced their way into contention, meaning a settled eleven is not yet confirmed. Vrancken acknowledged that finalising the lineup will be challenging.

Summer signing Amadou Ba‑Sy made an impact, scoring two goals in his first 45‑minute appearance against Vallecano despite a recent illness. Vrancken expressed happiness with the striker’s return to fitness. He admitted Ba‑Sy’s performance came too late to affect the initial Champions League squad submission, though one or two changes might still be possible.

Goalkeeping options have also improved with the arrival of Beau Reus, champion last year in Belgium’s second division. Vrancken praised Reus’s qualities while confirming Alexander Schwolow remains fully focused on Tuesday’s tie. The coach believes both keepers add depth to the squad.

Reflecting on the Tynecastle atmosphere, Vrancken said, “It was amazing. I liked the atmosphere very much, not only when we scored the goals or created chances but also the good defensive stuff.” With the friendly programme complete, Hearts’ focus is now fixed entirely on Sturm Graz, with players given a day to recover as the Champions League qualification campaign begins.
