Vrancken’s gamble: new captain Milne and Ba‑Sy’s call‑up before Sturm Graz
Belgian coach Wouter Vrancken faced the media on Tuesday ahead of Hearts’ Champions League second‑round qualifier against Sturm Graz, outlining a key question: how will the new captaincy set‑up and the inclusion of striker Amadou Ba‑Sy influence a side that feels “as ready as possible” for the challenge?
Harry Milne will wear the captain’s armband tomorrow night, while injured centre‑back Craig Halkett remains the club’s official captain. Stephen Kinglsey, Jamie McCart and Blair Spittal complete the leadership group, providing experience as the squad prepares for the match.
Striker Amadou Ba‑Sy impressed in Friday’s friendly win over Rayo Vallecano, prompting Vrancken to say it would have been a “mistake” not to add him to the squad. Ba’s impact was evident, and the Belgian manager highlighted the forward’s influence on the team’s attacking options.
Vrancken described Sturm Graz as a “strong” side with plenty of physicality and several good players, underscoring the challenge Hearts will face in the second‑round tie.
Hearts have completed their analysis as always and believe there are specific areas where they can create opportunities against the Austrian opposition.
The coach also said he tried to be “open” with players who missed the squad, singling out Josh McPake for delivering his best performance in Friday’s friendly.
If Hearts have the right quality on the ball they can have success against Sturm Graz’s pressure, Vrancken added, emphasizing the need for technical proficiency.
He stressed the importance of showing “guts” from the start and avoiding distraction by thinking about the next round or other qualifiers.
