Vitor Bruno says he would sign again if his side keeps winning each match
Anderlecht manager Vitor Bruno insisted he was not dissatisfied with his players after the Jupiler Pro League win, adding that he would sign a new contract if the same approach kept delivering victories. The statement came in the post‑match interview following the dramatic comeback against Cercle Brugge.
Mindset over style
Bruno praised the mental strength of his squad, saying the "character and mentality" that saw them fight back were more important than any aesthetic of "champagne football". He highlighted that the team’s resilience, especially in the final minutes, was the decisive factor in securing three points.
Romain Van der Pluym, specialist on Anderlecht and the Red Devils, echoed Bruno’s sentiment, noting the coach’s pride in his players’ mental fortitude.
Substitutes turn the tide
Substitutes Adriano Bertaccini and Mario Stroeykens each made decisive contributions after coming off the bench, with Bertaccini scoring the winning goal to seal a 2‑1 victory. Bruno explained that he had warned the players that the "man of the match could sometimes play a minute, or even less", stressing the importance of intensity over minutes played.
The Portuguese manager also reminded that Cercle Brugge could not sustain their early intensity for the full ninety minutes, allowing Anderlecht to exploit the dip in their opponent’s energy.
Bruno dismissed any notion of a tactical miracle, attributing the result solely to the players’ perseverance. He said, "A normal team would have given up. What satisfies me is how the lads keep fighting, showing attitude and character."
He added that the bench players sent the message he expects, even if they are not regular starters. "I have thirty‑three players and cannot start them all, but the work they do behind the scenes matters," he said.
While acknowledging the need to improve the overall quality of play, Bruno maintained that the result outweighs style. "What matters in the end is winning. Whether we face Genk or Beveren, the point is the same – we must take the three points," he asserted.
Photographer Maarten Straetmans captured Bruno’s post‑match reaction, showing the coach focused on the victory rather than the ninety‑plus minutes of pressure his side endured. The manager concluded with a bold claim: "If we can win every match like this, we will be champions – that is the mathematical reality, not the objective but the truth of the season."
