Virton chase giant‑killing as Genk await in Belgian Cup

Excelsior Virton will host KRC Genk at the Stade Yvan Georges in the round of 16 of the Belgian Cup, after beating KSV Oostkamp 0‑3 in the previous round. Coach Dražen Brnčić says the draw offers a chance for a giant‑killing.

Road to the round of 16

The draw took place on Monday afternoon, with former Red Devil Wesley Sonck conducting the lottery that paired Virton with the elite side. Having eliminated KSV Oostkamp 0‑3 in the 32nd‑final, Virton now face a top‑flight opponent.

Coach Brnčić's expectations

"It's a very good draw. We're going to face a top club. Despite last year's results and those of this year which aren't exceptional, they remain a top club in Belgium," Brnčić said after the announcement.

He added, "I think we wanted a big fixture, and this is a big fixture in my view. I really hope we will live an unforgettable moment."

Brnčić continued, "We will say that in the Cup, anything is possible, and I would like to believe that everything is possible. But no, I think the difference is still significant. Yet I think that on a match, anything is possible, and I would like to believe that."

Regarding preparation, he explained, "Exactly, for a match like this, we won't need to tell them anything. This external motivation will be natural. And I'm sure I won't have to say much to the players: everything will come from them themselves. Of course, as usual, with all the advice I give them, but that's where I may need to speak less."

Brnčić urged supporters to "become a fan of Virton" and promised an electric atmosphere at the Stade Yvan Georges, hoping the home side can turn the cup tie into a historic upset.
