Virgil van Dijk criticises Dutch media ahead of duel with Germany

Virgil van Dijk, captain of the Dutch national team and star of Liverpool FC, made his dissatisfaction with the Dutch media public at the press conference before the Nations League clash against Germany. He emphasized that the lack of appreciation even made him consider retirement in the summer.

Media criticism and possible retirement thoughts

The 35-year-old defender said that the coverage after the 2026 World Cup, in which the “the Oranje” were eliminated in the penalty shootout against Morocco, had heavily burdened him. “When you are on holiday and reflect on your career in the Dutch national team, you naturally want to experience appreciation,” Van Dijk said.

In the summer, retirement was on the table for the captain of the “the Oranje” because he felt that the media did not recognize him sufficiently. These doubts would have made him question a return to the national team.

Coach Xavi convinces the veteran

New national team coach Xavi, who succeeded Ronald Koeman, was able to convince Van Dijk quickly. “After ten seconds I already knew I would continue. It was simply a very good conversation,” the defender explained about his first talk with the Spanish coach.

Van Dijk also rejected accusations that he had interfered with the team’s tactics. “A journalist said it was my idea to play with five men in defense. That is complete nonsense,” he emphasized.

Despite the critical reports from his home country, Van Dijk remains available for the national team. With 96 caps, he could reach the milestone of 100 appearances as the eleventh player.
