Vincent Kompany condemns Olise's red card after unrest in Stavanger

Michael Olise received on Tuesday evening in the Champions League against Viking Stavanger the first red card of his professional career. The French international was sent off in the 74th minute by referee Georgi Kabakov with a yellow‑red, which coach Vincent Kompany immediately used as an occasion to express his dissatisfaction.

The Incident and the Punishment

In the halftime, more precisely in the middle of the second half, Olise lost control after a duel on the right touchline. He threw the ball into Zlatko Tripic’s face – a foul for which he had already received a yellow card. The Bulgarian referee Kabakov then showed the yellow‑red and sent Olise off.

Referee expert Patrick Ittrich commented on the incident on Prime Video and said: “He let himself be provoked. It is always visible at the start when a player commits a tactical foul and the referee does not sanction it. He must protect the players. That is a clear assault.”

Reactions from Experts and Teammates

Co‑commentator Benedikt Höwedes agreed with the verdict and added that Olise had “let himself get carried away”. After the final whistle, Prime‑expert Christoph Kramer expressed understanding for Olise’s reaction, although he did not approve of the behaviour. Kramer reminded that Tripic had shown multiple provocative duels and described Olise’s action as a “short‑circuit action in a millisecond”.

Harry Kane, Olise’s teammate, emphasized that the incident greatly changed the game: “He is a young player, he must learn from it. Mistakes happen, the important thing is that you learn from them. It’s a shame, because big games in the Champions League lie ahead of us.”

Vincent Kompany left no doubt: “This red card is of course stupid. He knows that. In such matters we are very clear.” He added that Olise will definitely miss the match against last year’s finalist Arsenal next week. Kompany also recalled earlier provocations by the Stavanger captain and emphasized that the team should emerge stronger from the incident.
